FAQ

Answers to frequently asked questions about Adaline.

General

What is ADA compliance?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires organizations to make their services accessible to people with disabilities. For digital content, this means following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA conformance level.

Who needs to comply with ADA?

  • State and local governments -- Required under ADA Title II (compliance deadlines are in effect)
  • Private businesses -- Required under ADA Title III if considered a "place of public accommodation"
  • Federal agencies -- Required under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Organizations receiving federal funding -- Required under Section 504

What standards does Adaline check against?

Adaline checks against WCAG 2.1 AA, which is the standard referenced by ADA Title II and widely accepted as the benchmark for digital accessibility compliance.

Scanning

How long does a scan take?

Most scans complete within 1-5 minutes. Larger documents (100+ pages) or complex web pages may take longer. You'll be notified when your scan is complete.

Can I scan password-protected PDFs?

No. Adaline needs to read the document content, so password-protected or encrypted PDFs must have their protection removed before scanning.

Can I scan pages behind a login?

Not currently. Adaline can only scan publicly accessible web pages. For pages behind authentication, consider exporting the page as a PDF and uploading it instead.

What happens to my uploaded documents?

Your documents are stored securely and encrypted at rest. They are only accessible to your account (and team members if applicable). You can delete your documents at any time from the scan details page.

Reports

How is the compliance score calculated?

The score represents the percentage of applicable WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria that your document passes, weighted by severity. Critical issues reduce the score more than minor ones.

Can I share reports with people outside my organization?

Yes. Each report has a unique shareable link hosted at adaline.report. Shared reports are read-only and don't require an Adaline account.

Are reports legally binding?

No. Adaline reports are informational tools to help you identify and fix accessibility issues. They do not constitute legal advice or certification. For legal questions about ADA compliance, consult an attorney.

Remediation

Does Adaline fix issues automatically?

No. Adaline identifies issues and provides specific guidance on how to fix them, but the remediation itself is done by you or your team. We provide detailed step-by-step instructions for each issue.

I fixed the issues. How do I verify?

Re-scan the document after making your fixes. You can use the report comparison feature to see what's been resolved and what remains.

Account

Can I try Adaline for free?

Yes. Adaline offers a free tier that allows you to scan a limited number of documents per month. Visit adaline.ink to get started.

How do I cancel my account?

Go to Settings > Account > Delete Account. This will permanently delete your account and all associated data. If you're on a paid plan, you can downgrade to the free tier instead of deleting your account.

I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

Click Forgot Password on the login page. You'll receive an email with a password reset link.

Who owns the documents I upload?

You do. Adaline does not claim any ownership over documents you upload. Your content remains yours. We process it solely to provide the accessibility scanning and conversion services you request.

Can I upload documents I don't own?

You should only upload documents you have the right to process. This typically means documents you created, documents your organization owns, or documents you have explicit permission to convert. Uploading copyrighted materials without authorization may violate copyright law.

Does educational fair use apply?

Fair use is a legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission for purposes such as education, commentary, and research. Converting a document to an accessible format for a student with a disability is generally considered a reasonable accommodation under ADA, which may be supported by fair use principles. However, fair use is fact-specific -- consult your institution's legal counsel for guidance on your specific situation.

What is Adaline's DMCA policy?

Adaline complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). If you believe content hosted on our platform infringes your copyright, you can submit a DMCA takedown notice to our designated agent. We will promptly remove or disable access to the material in question and notify the account holder.

  6. Your physical or electronic signature

What happens after a takedown notice?

We will remove or disable access to the material within 48 hours. The account holder will be notified and may submit a counter-notice if they believe the takedown was in error. Repeat infringers may have their accounts terminated.

Does Adaline's AI processing create derivative works?

No. When Adaline processes a document (parsing structure, generating alt text, converting formats), the output is a transformed version of your original content for accessibility purposes. We do not create new creative works from your documents.
